Project Management Tip of the Week - 6th September 2022

Hello, Jasmine here from LVL Up Consulting with this week's project management tip of the week. And this week, it's all about when to escalate an issue to your project sponsor. In my experience, project sponsors are very busy people. They have day jobs which can sometimes be in the project world as like a project or a portfolio manager.

But most of the time. They're an executive or they're a general manager or someone who has a bigger portfolio of work. So do them a favor. Don't go to them with every single issue. But it is really important to escalate early and to escalate well. So when should you escalate to a project sponsor or a project board?

Generally my golden rule for escalation is when you have an issue that is gonna affect the scope, the timeline, or the budget of your project and it can't be remediated within a day. So issues arise all the time in project management. It is a journey but if there is an issue that you cannot become unstuck with your own accord in one day and it is gonna affect the scope, the time or the budget, then you do need to escalate and bring in your sponsor.

Sometimes it's just for visibility to let them know that you are facing the issue. And then sometimes when you really need the muscle, you ask them to step in and to help, help fix the situation. So that's when I would generally go to a project sponsor, not all the time, not for every micro issue, but when it's important and it's going to impact your scope, budget, or timeline.

That's my tip for this week.

I'll see you next week.
