Project Management Tip of the Week

Hello, Jasmine here from LVL Up Consulting with this week's project management tip of the week. And my tip this week is in relation to micro versus macro project management. They are totally different styles and there is a time and a place for both of them.

Just as it sort of sounds like micro project management is where the PM is really down in the nitty gritty. They may actually be doing a lot of the deliverables for a project and they are managing their team at a very task orientated level. To be effective when you're doing this style of project management is to of course have your tasks listed somewhere central where everyone can see. And AGILE tools are brilliant for this, whether it's Jira or Trello or something else.

And you do ceremonies such as the daily standup to check where everybody is at which may occur more than once a day. So that is the micro style of project management. You know, everything that's happening always. And you may be responsible for doing a lot of the heavy lifting.

Macro project management on the other hand is where you are a project manager who may be coordinating other people. You may not do a lot of the actual deliverables for the work, you are just making sure the project team are doing it. Again, you may wish to use tools such as daily standups or you may let people self-manage and check in on their progress in more of a hands-off fashion. As I mentioned, both exist, both have a time and a place.

What my big tip for everyone is make sure you know which mode you are in and when, and be very clear about that with your team. So if you feel like you've gone off schedule or the team needs some support, raise your hand and say, I'm here to give you some micro project management right now. And that shouldn't be something that you cringe at or recoil from.

Because as I said, there is a time and a place for all hands on deck to jump in and get into the nitty gritty. And sometimes you need to stand back and let people do what they do because they are experts and in your project team for a reason. They're my tips. I would love to hear your thoughts on what those time and places might be for micro and macro project management, but that is my project management team of the week.

I'll see you next time.
